Our Local Food, a program of the Kansas Rural Center, is accepting applications for eight summer internship positions across the state. Internships are open to current college students and recent graduates wanting to learn more about the local food movement and excited to cultivate connections between farmers, businesses, consumers and communities.

Applicants must be able to commit to working a minimum of 20 hours per week during the ten-week internship, which runs from June 1 to August 15. Interns who can dedicate additional time to the internship will gain more from it and have the opportunity be involved in more compelling work. Internships are unpaid, however each intern will receive a $1000 stipend to defray costs at the completion of the 10-week commitment.

Position: Chapter Intern
Internship period: June 1 - August 15, 2012

Reports to: Chapter Coordinator and OLF Program Director
Purpose of Intern Program:
- To assist in the development and implementation of Our Local Food, a program of Kansas Rural Center, largely through communication and member service responsibilities.
- To provide college students an opportunity to link classroom learning with "real world" experience as they refine communications skills, get acquainted with a new community, learn about economic and agricultural issues facing our food supply, and establish new relationships.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Promote Our Local food program at community and regional events.
- Assist with planning one or more regional workshops focused on establishing local food purchasing relationships.
- Assist with the development and distribution of monthly e-newsletters for chapterʼs three target audiences–farm, business and consumer.
- Promote foodhub by highlighting web site listings in weekly emails to farms and businesses.
- Visit member farms, markets, and businesses to develop profiles for use in enewsletters, direct marketing guide and on OLF web site.
- Distribute banners, brochures and toolkit items to members.
- Feature Summer crops, growers, and additional recipes in OLF Chapter e-newsletters.
- Collect and submit specialty crop market and grocer pricing data monthly.
- Research and collect data on the chapterʼs foodshed and assist with the development of resources to inform local government and economic development professions on the current and potential economic impacts of a regional food system.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the OLF Program Director.
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of at least four university semesters with evidence of strong academic performance.
- Interest in sustainable agriculture, food production and/or marketing.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communications skills
- Experience working with individuals, groups and co-workers to accomplish goals, as evidenced by college and/or community activities.
- Ability to utilize electronic communication and computer applications within the framework of program development, delivery, and management to fulfill day-to-day responsibilities.
- Must be a self-starter who can work with a minimum of supervision.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Understanding of and passion for sustainable and ecological small farming practices
- Passion for and experience with local food and/or restaurant - food business
- Events planning skills
- Ability to manage people, especially volunteers, effectively for results
Special Requirements:
- Ability to provide own transportation throughout chapter region
- Reliable access to computer and high-speed internet
- Ability to work from home as part of remote team, with minimum of supervision
- Attend monthly in-person chapter team meetings, weekly intern team conference calls
